Supposedly
Hey Jude was recorded on a machine just like this, and if it's good
enough for the Fab Four then it's good enough for any rocking outfit.
Hard to believe that this machine used to be state of the art, but
it does have Sel-Sync (an Ampex invention) so punches are a breeze.
Well, not really a breeze but they are possible (-barely). Recording
a whole band on this machine would be difficult if you're used to
1,024 tracks on Alsihad, but with careful planning and a tight band
you could make a kick-arse sounding album on this baby. Don't forget,
both Bleach and Abbey Rd were recorded on an 8-track (in fact Bleach
was recorded on a Otari half-inch 8-track at 15 ips with no noise
reduction and a dead track).
