It's a Recording Studio!

Linear Recording is a multi-room facility in Leichhardt, 5 kms west of the CBD of Sydney. The studio has been built from the ground-up solely for the purpose of recording bands in an environment that belies it's cost. Recent acts include Josh Pyke, INXS, Empire of the Sun, Leroy Lee, Lions At Your Door, Spazmoo, Son Venemo, Reys De La Onda, The Evening Son, Darryl Beaton & The Bretheren Martinez, Declan Kelly, The Van, Tim Weekes, Jonathan Zwartz, The Silver Scene, The Mercy Arms, The Resistance, Gethsemane, Damn Arms, Sneaky Sound System, The Saturns, Wallspace, Helter, Sleepy Jackson, Katie Noonan, The Pennydreadfuls, Teenager, Special Patrol, Minder, Donnie Sloan, Kristin Berardi, Bluebottle Kiss and more.

Linear Recording is primarily a tape-based analogue studio, focusing on capturing great performances with as much of the band playing live as possible. We love the sound of recordings from the 60's and 70's, and have made it our business to recreate the magic of that era. That said, we aren't total recording Neanderthals and we'd hate to scare off those who like to dabble in digital (or track with the view to taking stuff away) so we also have Apogee AD16X and DA16X converters which, as they say, sound amazing. Perfect for tape transfers or tricky overdubs. We also now have a Protools rig available for those who want seamless integration of their existing projects. Thankfully, this can connect to the Apogees so you don't have to compromise your sounds with digi converters. phew.

Our equipment list includes some of the finest gear ever made, including a discrete transformer-coupled AWA recording console, Ampex and Studer tape machines, Neumann, RCA and AKG microphones, Manley/Pultec/Neve/FocusriteISA EQ's, AKG spring and EMT plate reverbs, large rooms, classic instruments (Rhodes/Hammond/Clav/Wurly/Piano) and great outboard. Not only that, but we're one of the cheaper recording studios in Sydney, proving that you can sometimes have your cake and eat it too. Hot dang!

Finally, and most importantly, EVERYTHING WORKS! No museum pieces here. Every channel on every tape machine/console actually passes signal as it was designed to do. So we won't hit you with a list of things you can't use when you arrive. Not easy when the average age of equipment here is about 30 years old, but hey. If it doesn't work, then it should be in the rack!
